# Make presentations with Claude Code or Codex.

Install Decktype on a Mac with Apple silicon and choose Connect an Agent: Claude Code or Codex gets the deck CLI and the Decktype skill. Describe the deck to your agent: it writes a .deck file in your templates, you refine it in Decktype, then it exports a PDF, or a PowerPoint file with Pro or Autonomous.

[Connect an agent, step by step](https://decktype.com/en/agents)

## With Claude Code.

From your Mac to the delivered file, in eight steps. You run the setup commands in a terminal; the agent runs the deck commands.

### 1. Install Decktype and connect Claude Code

Download Decktype and run Claude Code once on this Mac. In the Decktype menu, choose Connect an Agent, then Claude Code: Decktype installs the deck CLI and the skill in ~/.claude/skills/decktype.

### 2. Or install the public plugin

The same skill is published in the public decktype-agent plugin; the deck CLI still comes from Decktype. Then open a new session and, if Claude Code asks for it, run /reload-plugins.

```sh
claude plugin marketplace add Tontoon7/decktype-agent
claude plugin install decktype@decktype-agent
```

### 3. Check the deck CLI

The CLI is installed in ~/Library/Application Support/Decktype/bin, which is not on the PATH by default. In a new terminal, add that folder, then check the command. If command -v deck returns nothing, run Connect an Agent again.

```sh
export PATH="$HOME/Library/Application Support/Decktype/bin:$PATH"
command -v deck
deck --version
```

### 4. Brief your agent

Name the audience, the decision you need, the allowed sources and the delivery format, then approve the outline before the file. Copy this prompt and replace the brackets.

The brief prompt

```text
Create an editable 7-slide Decktype presentation.
Audience: [who will see it]
Decision: [the one approval or action the deck should produce]
Source material: [files or links the agent may use]
Constraints: [tone, mandatory facts, forbidden claims]
Delivery: keep the .deck as the source and export a .pptx after approval.
First propose one message and one Decktype template per slide.
Do not generate the file until I approve that outline.
Do not invent metrics, quotations, customers, or sources.
After generation, validate, lint, render, and inspect every slide.
```

### 5. Let the agent build, validate and render

The skill has it read the installed templates and fill their slots, then validate the deck and render every slide as an image to inspect it.

```sh
deck templates list --json
deck new product-review.deck --title "Product review"
deck regenerate product-review.deck
deck validate product-review.deck --json
deck lint product-review.deck
deck render product-review.deck --out product-review-preview
```

### 6. Refine in Decktype, then hand the deck back

Open the .deck in Decktype to change a sentence, a position or a style. On its next pass, the agent changes the template content and keeps your edits.

### 7. Deliver a PDF or a PowerPoint file

PDF and PNG export are included on every plan; Keynote-compatible PowerPoint export from Pro. Open the exported file in the PowerPoint or Keynote version your recipient uses before you send it.

```sh
deck export product-review.deck --out product-review.pptx
```

### 8. Pick up an existing PowerPoint file

The agent imports the file as a .deck, reads the import warnings and inspects the render before revising it. Imported slides stay free, with no link to a template.

```sh
deck import source.pptx --out imported.deck --json
deck validate imported.deck --json
deck render imported.deck --out imported-preview
```

## With Codex.

The same tools: only the skill folder and the plugin commands change.

### 1. Install Decktype and connect Codex

Download Decktype and run Codex once on this Mac. In the Decktype menu, choose Connect an Agent, then Codex: Decktype installs the deck CLI and the skill in ~/.codex/skills/decktype.

### 2. Or install the public plugin

The same skill exists as a Codex plugin; the deck CLI still comes from Decktype. Then open a new Codex session: the skill is selected when your request mentions a .deck or a Decktype presentation.

```sh
codex plugin marketplace add Tontoon7/decktype-agent
codex plugin add decktype@decktype-agent
```

### 3. Then follow the same steps

Checking the CLI, the brief, validation, editing, export and import work the same way with Codex: follow steps 3 to 8 of Claude Code.

## And with Cursor?

Decktype does not support Cursor today and has not tested it.

Connect an Agent installs the deck CLI and the Decktype skill for Claude Code and Codex only, and the public decktype-agent plugin is published for those two agents. This page says nothing about what Cursor itself can do.

## Which option should you choose?

By the way you work, using only the facts in the table.

### You write your slides in Markdown

Marp and Slidev start from a Markdown file and export to PDF or PPTX, according to their documentation. With Marp, the PPTX is made of pre-rendered images and the editable option is still experimental; for Slidev, PPTX editability is not documented.

### You present in a browser

reveal.js produces an HTML presentation, with Markdown and PDF export. Its README does not mention PPTX.

### You generate a .pptx with code

python-pptx creates, reads and updates .pptx files from data, on any Python platform, without PowerPoint. What the pptx skill adds is not verified here.

### You want a web tool

Gamma is a web app. As of July 15, 2026, its free plan listed PDF and PPTX import and PDF, PPTX, PNG and Google Slides export.

### You want a local HTML project driven by an agent

Deckary Canvas writes a local HTML project, with a CLI and an MCP server for Claude Code, and exports to HTML, PDF, PNG or PPTX. Its price is not documented in its README.

### You use Claude Slides

We have not read an official source on Claude Slides: its row stays Not verified. Compare on a deck you actually need to produce.

### You want a file you refine and your agent picks up again

Decktype is a presentation editor: Claude Code or Codex writes a .deck in your templates, you refine it by hand, and the agent keeps your edits on its next pass. It picks up an existing PowerPoint file and delivers the file itself.

### Where Decktype stops

- Mac with Apple silicon (M1 or later) and macOS 11 or later. No Windows version.
- Claude Code and Codex only: Cursor is not supported.
- PowerPoint export and images generated in the deck need Pro or Autonomous; PDF and PNG export are included on every plan.
- Check the exported file in the PowerPoint or Keynote version your recipient uses: rendering differences can remain.
- Slides imported from PowerPoint stay free, with no link to a template.

## Common questions.

### How do I make a presentation with Claude Code?

Install Decktype on a Mac with Apple silicon, then choose Connect an Agent in the Decktype menu: Claude Code gets the deck CLI and the Decktype skill. In a new session, describe the audience, the decision you need and your sources. Claude Code writes a .deck file in your templates, validates it and renders it as images; you refine it in Decktype, then it exports a PDF, or a PowerPoint file with Pro or Autonomous.

### How do I make a presentation with Codex?

Just like with Claude Code: Connect an Agent installs the deck CLI and the Decktype skill in ~/.codex/skills/decktype. You can also add the public plugin with codex plugin marketplace add Tontoon7/decktype-agent, then codex plugin add decktype@decktype-agent. In a new session, Codex creates the .deck, validates it, renders it and exports it with the same deck commands.

### Does Decktype work with Cursor?

Not today. Connect an Agent installs the deck CLI and skill for Claude Code and Codex only. Decktype does not support Cursor and has not tested it.

### How is it different from Claude Slides?

Decktype is a presentation editor, and your decks are .deck files on your drive. Your agent picks up an existing PowerPoint file, updates figures from a CSV and delivers the file itself, with no clicks from you. You refine any slide by hand, and the agent keeps your edits when it revises the deck. Decktype works with Claude Code and with Codex.

### Can my agent pick up an existing PowerPoint file?

Yes. The deck import command converts a .pptx file into a .deck, on every plan. Your agent then reads the import warnings and inspects the render before revising the deck. Imported slides stay free, with no link to a template: the agent edits their elements directly or rebuilds them with a template.

### Why not Marp, Slidev or reveal.js?

They suit you if you write your slides in Markdown or HTML and deliver a web page or a PDF. According to their official documentation, Marp’s PPTX is made of pre-rendered images, its editable option is still experimental, and the reveal.js README does not mention PPTX. Decktype serves another purpose: a file you refine by hand in an editor and that your agent picks up afterwards. The comparison on this page cites and dates every source.

### Can I deliver a PowerPoint file?

PDF and PNG export are included on every plan, as is PowerPoint import. PowerPoint export, compatible with Keynote, is included from Pro.

### Is Decktype free?

Yes, to edit, present, import PowerPoint files and export PDF and PNG, and your agent works on the free plan. Pro, at €12 a month, adds PowerPoint export, images generated in the deck and the Cloud. Autonomous, at €29 a month, adds the built-in assistant.

### What about Windows?

Not yet. Decktype is available for Mac with Apple silicon.
